Why I Like This Recipe?

The tofu croutons are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, adding the perfect crunch to my soup without any carbs.

I not only love the flavor but also appreciate the added protein, which keeps me full longer.

My dinner soup has been elevated, satisfying both my taste buds and my nutritional needs.

How to Choose Tofu?

For this recipe, firm or extra-firm tofu is the best choice.

It holds its shape well during the air frying process and becomes crispy on the outside while staying tender on the inside. Soft or silken tofu would be too delicate and may break apart easily.

Make sure to press the tofu to remove excess moisture before cutting it into cubes. This will help achieve that perfect crispy texture when air frying!

How to Make Tofu Croutons?

Making tofu croutons is simple. Just toss the cubed tofu with some spices, then air fry for a few minutes to get crispy, delicious croutons.

Why Tofu Croutons?

High Protein Content:

Unlike traditional croutons, tofu cubes are packed with protein. A 3.5-ounce (100g) serving of tofu contains about 8 grams of protein, making it an excellent addition to your diet, especially if you're eating plant-based foods or simply want to increase your protein intake.

Low Carbs and Calories:

Tofu is naturally low in carbs and calories. 100g of tofu contains only about 76 calories and 2 grams of carbs.

Versatile Flavor:

Tofu is like a blank canvas. It absorbs the flavors of any seasonings or marinades you use, such as a mix of lemon juice, salt, and pepper, allowing you to customize the croutons to pair perfectly with any soup you serve.

Crispy Texture:

After air frying, tofu takes on a satisfying crunch that rivals traditional croutons. This crispy texture is key to adding extra flavor to your soup.

Healthier Fats:

Using an air fryer means you can achieve a crispy texture with minimal oil. Compared to deep-fried croutons, tofu croutons are a healthier choice.

Key Points

Leave Space Between the Tofu: Don’t place the tofu too closely together, leave some gaps so the air can circulate and cook it evenly.

Brush Oil and Sauce: Make sure to brush oil and BBQ sauce on both sides of the tofu so it will absorb the flavor and be crispy on the outside, tender on the inside.

Air Fryer Temperature and Time: Cook at 180°C for 3 minutes, then 4 more minutes. If you control the time and temperature well, the tofu will turn out perfectly fried.

Add Spicy Seasoning: If you like it spicy, you can add some dry dipping powder for more depth of flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Topping for Soup: Add these crispy tofu croutons on top of your favorite soups like miso soup, vegetable soup, or even creamy tomato soup for an extra crunch and protein boost.

Salad Addition: Toss them into a salad for a crunchy texture and a savory, satisfying element.

Snack: Enjoy them on their own as a healthy snack with a side of dipping sauce, like soy sauce or a spicy chili dip.

Stir-Fry: Incorporate them into a stir-fry for added texture and flavor, paired with your favorite veggies and sauce.

storage and reheating suggestions

Storage:

Room Temperature: If you plan to consume the croutons within a day or two, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay crispy for a short period.

Refrigeration: For longer storage, place the tofu croutons in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days, but the texture might soften slightly over time.

Reheating:

Air Fryer/Oven: To restore the crispiness, reheat the tofu croutons in the air fryer/oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 3-5 minutes, checking regularly until they’re hot and crispy again.

FAQs:

Q
Can I skip brushing the oil?
A
Yes, you can skip brushing the oil, but brushing a layer of oil helps the tofu surface become more golden and crispy.
If you don’t want to add oil, you can try using spray oil to cover it evenly. This way, there will be less fat, but it will still give a nice crunch.
Q
Can I adjust the temperature and time in the air fryer?
A
Yes, the temperature and time can be adjusted slightly based on your air fryer model.
If you like a crunchier texture, you can extend the cooking time, but be sure to keep an eye on it to avoid overcooking.
Q
How to Tell if the Tofu is Fully Cooked?
A
The tofu should be golden and crispy on the outside, with a dry surface, and slightly firm on the inside.
You can gently poke it with a fork; the inside should be firm, not soft and mushy.
Q
What can I use instead of BBQ sauce?
A
If you don’t have BBQ sauce, you can substitute it with other sauces, such as soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or olive oil with some spices. Adjust to your taste, and it can still be delicious.
Q
Can I make a vegetarian version?
A
Of course! This dish is already vegetarian; just make sure to use sauces that don’t contain animal ingredients, and it will be completely plant-based.
You can use plant-based sauces or homemade sauces as alternatives.
